The
Purpose
Living in an earth berm home I do not have the luxury of
having a basement to house all of my tanks working
essentials so I needed to construct a stand large enough
to house everything in a area that my wife would allow me
to have in the living room.
This is my effort to meet those needs
The Frame
The frame of the stand is
constructed of kiln dried 2X4 pine, I put the bottom
sheet under the 2X4's to allow for a spill confinement
area that will hold about 15 gallons of water. All of the
joints are glued and stacked and joined on top or under
the uprights to provide as much strength as possible.
there are 2 removable uprights behind the doors to allow
sump removal if required
The Sheeting
To provide as much strength as I
could I covered the 2X4 frame with 1/2" Oak plywood and
then in addition to the 1/2 top I added an additional 5/8"
Oak sheet to the top and a solid Oak 3.5" Bullnose
to the front edge.
I then sealed all inside seams with paintable
acrylic calking
The Finish
All inside surfaces were painted
with 3 coats of bright white marine finish to make it as
bright inside as possible and seal the wood from the
inevitable humidity and spillage
All outside surfaces were stained with hand rubbed Minwax
stain and then finished with 3 coats of polyurethane
sealer
Finished Product
Here is the finished product just
before I drilled the (5) 1.75" holes in the top rear of
the stand to allow the PVC piping to pass through and
added the 4" Radio Shack muffin fan to push air in from
the rear panel.
So far this has worked out well with enough air moving
through the stand to prevent mold or mildew and remove the
heat from the sump lighting
