My name is Todd and I am a reefoholic, it all started when my kids brought home a goldfish from the county fair 27 years ago. I went to the Local Fish Store to get a fishbowl and have never stopped getting new "bowls" ever since. Come to think of it I think I had a genetic disposition toward this most addicting habit as I remember my father having many fish tanks in his study so it must be his fault.
My current state of addiction includes my most ambitious system yet.
I currently am the indentured servant of  a
150 Gallon Saltwater Reef System

The Show Tank

The show tank section of the system is 48" Wide X 18" Deep X 31" Tall and contains 110 gallons of saltwater, displacing some of the saltwater is about 120 pounds of  premium live rock harvested by Walt Smith International in the Fiji Islands following strict ecological protection guidelines to assure a sustainable environmentally friendly business. There is also a 5" layer of "southdown sand topped with 3/4"  layer of crushed Aragonite rubble to anchor the southdown sand.

The Sump / Refugium
I constructed this sump refugium starting with a 40 gallon AGA breeder tank and adding the custom cut .25" glass divisions with silicone
The first chamber on the right side is where the (3) 1" overflows deposit the surface skim water from the show tank into the  skimmer chamber
The water then goes under the first wall of the bubble trap and travels up the 1" chamber and falls over the middle wall  and then back down the second 1" chamber eliminating almost all skimmer chamber bubbles
Water then travels under the 3rd wall and enters the refugium chamber
a short angled  divider keeps the water from churning up the sandbed while directing water up to the macro algae refugium area
The water then falls over the 4th divider and enters a passive media shelf area constructed from light grid plastic where I put bagged media or floss if required and then passes over the stainless steel 300 watt heater in the bottom of the chamber then the water goes under the 5th divider and enters the pump pickup area to be returned to the show tank
